Solar PV panels work by catching the sun's rays and converting the light into electricity. A semi conducting material such as silicone, has a special property known as photoelectric effect which releases small amounts of electricity.

Solar PV panels can work during overcast days aswell as sunny days. The most important criteria is that they are in an East/South/Westerly configuration. 

How much roof space do I need for a Solar PV Panel system?

The smallest Solar PV panel sytem is a 1kw peak output system and this will require roughly 6 to 10m² depending on the panel.
