AirSourceHeatPump

Air Source Heat Pumps in the UK

Air source heat pumps work on the same basic principle as the ground source heatpumps, the only difference being the primary heat source being the air, a large radial fan sucks air over the evaporator containing HFC refrigerant transferring its ambient temperature, from this point on the process is the same as the ground source heatpump, the only difference being periodically the unit must defrost itself because  the moisture in the air freezes up the evaporator,in defrost mode no heating occurs this is where the Terra CL unit has the advantage of a large surface area, defrost cycles are less frequent allowing for more heating time. Because air temperatures fluctuate throughout the year this has an effect on the Air source heatpumps output, Example Terra CL 10.5 kw delivers  10.5 kw @ air temp 2degC, when the air temperature rises to 10 degC the output rises to 15kw, as temperatures fall so does the output, These parameters are similar for all air source heatpumps so it is always important to study the specification CoP remains the same at all temperature ranges.
A CoP of 3 indicates 1kWh of electric is used to obtain 3kWh of heating. The higher the CoP the more efficient the pump is running. A poorly designed and poorly installed system will reduce the CoP, leading to higher energy bills. Beware of undersized collectors, and “energy boosters” or emergent heaters built into the heat pump, they use a CoP of 1. You may be getting a bargain at the time, but you’ll pay for it for many years to come.

Optimal output - Each Terra-CL heat pump contains a powerful radial fan producing high air pressure and increasing the output of the heat pump. Just 1kW of electricity can produce up to 3.8kW of heat; compare this to a standard boiler system where 1kW of input will produce 1kw of output.

Navigator Control - The NAVIGATOR heating control system allows for remote monitoring via a mobile phone and internet. Its features include active weather compensation, total system control, intelligent defrost technology and bivalent control. This culminates in a highly effective and fully controllable heating system.

Quiet Heating - The thermally uncoupled casing provides quiet-running in the Terra-CL series. The casing acts as sound proofing, and thermally insulates the heat pump.

Hygenix - Our HYGENIX hot water storage systems can provide fresh hygienically clean hot water. This system can act as a buffer tank, integrating several renewable technologies and resulting in a more efficient heat pump.

HGL Technology - Hot Gas Loading Technology, is an IDM patented technology that allows heat pumps to achieve higher temperatures without compromising on COP.

Long service life - Thanks to buffer accumulator and HGL technology, the heat pump runs less frequently, operating at maximum efficiency for longer and avoiding inefficient start up procedure. This extends the life of the compressor, resulting in highly cost effective technology.

Great Investment

Get a good return on your investment, with the Renewable Heating Incentive due to begin in June 2011, it is expected to yield an inflation beating return of up to 12%, resulting in  most systems paying for themselves within 5 to 10 years. Current estimates of the RHI, predict a price of 7.5p for 1kWh of heat produced from an air sources heat pump. Current electric prices of 12p and a heat pump with a CoP of 3 will cost 4p to produce 1kWh, earning you 3.5p profit for every kWh needed.  This will cut your fuel bills, and reduce your dependence on the ever increasing cost of oil and gas, future-proofing your energy bills to rising costs. Heat pumps also work well with under floor heating, taking advantage of the lower running costs, increasing the efficiency of the heat pump, saving you more money.
