Lewis Plates
Lewis Plates are rolled self-supporting, dovetailed, galvanised steel reinforcement sheets which allow lightweight concrete floors of limited thickness to be laid on (primarily) timber floor framing. It is designed to work in conjunction with under floor heating, creating a thermal mass to compliment low temperature distribution systems. The plates are laid over the joists and nailed or screwed down; the underfloor heating pipe is clipped to them and a screed is then laid on top.
The key benefit to a floor laid with lewis plates include is the increase in the structural strength of the floor. Compared to traditional wooden joisted floors, the conrete structure help spread the load-bearing capacity of the floor. It also protects the floor from water damage. Lewis plates also help creat sound and fire resistant floors, ideal for apartments, along with other high-risk areas such as museums, computer rooms, archives and storage spaces for inflammable materials.
